A well-maintained white t-shirt keeps its brightness. But over time, heat, perspiration, or harsh detergents can cause cotton fibers to dull and yellow. At Tafanelli, we believe a white garment deserves the same care as a canvas: delicacy, patience, and respect for the material. Here is how to keep your white t-shirt brilliant, without damaging it.

Preserving whiteness — 250 GSM organic cotton, Tafanelli.
Understanding why cotton yellows
Cotton is a living natural fiber. Over time, it reacts to three elements: heat, humidity, and chemical residues left by detergents or sweat. These agents oxidize the fiber and alter its original color. Quality t-shirts—such as those made from heavy organic cotton—are more resistant, but require proper care.
A yellowed white t-shirt is not ruined: it is waiting for care. With the right steps, its whiteness can be restored without losing the softness of the cotton.
Wash gently, never at high temperatures
The first instinct is often to turn up the heat. That is the wrong instinct. An organic cotton t-shirt is ideally washed at 30°C: enough to clean, but low enough to avoid damaging the fibers. Hot water sets yellow stains and dulls the knit. Prefer a short cycle, a mild detergent, and no fabric softener.
Before each wash, a quick soak in a mix of lukewarm water, baking soda, and white vinegar neutralizes residues and revives the fabric's whiteness.
Air dry, never use a tumble dryer
The tumble dryer is the enemy of white: heat accelerates oxidation and burns the fibers. Dry your t-shirt flat or on a wooden hanger, in the shade, in a well-ventilated area. Direct sunlight whitens, but it also weakens the fabric: daylight is sufficient. Whiteness comes from the fabric breathing, not from heat.
Maintaining whiteness over time
Once a month, you can soak your white t-shirt in a basin of lukewarm water with a spoonful of sodium percarbonate. It is an ecological alternative to bleach that is safe for organic cotton. Avoid high-temperature ironing: the heat sets micro-traces of yellow into the fibers.
By following these simple steps, your t-shirt will retain its initial brilliance and dense texture, wash after wash. At Tafanelli, we believe a well-cared-for garment ages like a fine piece of leather: it gains character.
