How to wash a black t-shirt without it fading

Black is the most demanding color. A black t-shirt can lose its depth if washed poorly, too often, or at too high a temperature. At Tafanelli, every organic cotton piece is designed to last: to maintain its grain, its density, and that matte intensity that makes black so beautiful. Here is how to care for your t-shirt without it fading.

Preserving the depth of black — 250 GSM organic cotton, Tafanelli.

Why black fades

Black is both a dense and a delicate shade. The pigments used to dye cotton are altered by heat, friction, or overly alkaline detergent. The result: the fibers open up, release the color, and the black becomes grey, dull, and lackluster.

The key is gentleness: wash less, wash cold, and let the fabric breathe. Black does not like to be rushed.

Use a gentle, natural detergent

Avoid "whitening" detergents or those containing brightening agents: they eat away at the dye. Opt for a detergent specifically for "dark colors" or a homemade mixture based on Marseille soap and white vinegar. The latter naturally sets the pigments and softens the fiber.

If your t-shirt is new, let it soak for 10 minutes in cold, salty water before the first wash. Salt acts as a natural dye fixative.

Wash cold, always inside out

A black t-shirt is best washed at 30°C maximum, inside out, and never mixed with light-colored clothing. Friction between fabrics accelerates fading. Choose a short cycle, spin gently, and avoid the tumble dryer.

Heat is the enemy of black: it expands the fiber and causes the color to leach out. Let your t-shirt dry flat, away from direct sunlight, in a well-ventilated area.

Preserving the cotton texture

The beauty of a black t-shirt lies in its depth. A dense cotton like that of the Tafanelli 250 GSM T-shirt maintains this texture if you avoid industrial detergents and overly frequent washing. Wearing it a few times before washing is often better than cleaning it systematically.

A black t-shirt ages well if it breathes. It is a color with character, which gains nuance over time if it is treated with respect.
