How to clean a waxed jacket

A handcrafted oilskin jacket is no ordinary garment. It is a piece with character, designed to last, evolve, and develop a patina over time. At Tafanelli, every oilskin tells a story: one of French craftsmanship, precise skill, and a fabric intended to face the sea, the rain, and the years.

Oilskin — made in France, designed to last.

A living fabric

Oilskin is a unique material. Its surface is impregnated with a thin layer of natural oil or wax, which makes it waterproof while giving it its slightly shiny, textured appearance. Unlike synthetic fabrics, it breathes, marks, creases, and transforms — this is what makes it so charming.

An oilskin jacket develops a patina over time. Every crease and every shade tells the story of how you use it. Rather than avoiding this evolution, you should embrace it, understand it, and maintain it without betraying its nature.

Cleaning without altering

The first rule to avoid: the washing machine. Oilskin cannot withstand detergents or high temperatures. To clean it, simply use a soft sponge and cold water. A quick wipe is enough to remove dust, salt, or mud.

For stubborn stains, a damp cloth with a little soap (Marseille soap is ideal) will do the trick. Then let the jacket air-dry, away from any heat source: radiators, tumble dryers, or direct sunlight could damage the protective wax.

Re-waterproofing the fabric

Over time and with light cleaning, the canvas may lose some of its protection. To revive it, simply apply a thin layer of natural wax or specific oil. Use a soft cloth, then lightly heat the surface with a hairdryer to even out the material.

This step, which should be done once or twice a year depending on usage, helps prolong the life of the jacket while maintaining its suppleness and water resistance. It is a simple, almost meditative ritual — a way of maintaining your connection to what you wear.

Proper storage

Oilskin does not like excessive humidity or confined spaces. Hang the jacket on a sturdy hanger in a dry, well-ventilated place. If it is wet, let it dry naturally before storing it.

Avoid plastic covers, which prevent the fabric from breathing. A cotton cover or a simple sheet draped over it is sufficient. The material needs air — just like the sea it evokes.

A garment that lives with you

Caring for an oilskin jacket means accepting that it will change, soften, and hold the traces of time. This is what makes it unique. Every Tafanelli piece is designed to age well, accompanying your movements and your memories.

A well-maintained jacket doesn't wear out; it tells a story.
