Pourquoi mon t-shirt vrille après lavage ?

Why does my t-shirt twist after washing?

Structure & fit

If your t-shirt seems to twist after washing, it's not your imagination. The side seams move to the front or back and the garment loses its alignment. This phenomenon is called spiraling. It is often linked to the knit structure and the way the fabric was cut.

What is a spiraling t-shirt

A t-shirt spirals when the side seams no longer remain straight. They shift towards the front or back after washing.

Visually, this gives the impression that the t-shirt is rotating around the body. The garment looks twisted even though it was perfectly straight to begin with.

Simple sign: if the side seam ends up on your stomach instead of the side of your body, your t-shirt is spiraling.

The role of jersey knit

Most t-shirts are made of cotton jersey. This knit has a natural twist due to the yarn used during the knitting process.

If the material is not properly stabilized before cutting, this twist can be released after washing. This is what causes the garment to rotate.

Lightweight or poorly stabilized fabrics are more susceptible to this phenomenon.

Cutting the fabric

A key factor is the direction in which the fabric is cut. If the cut is not aligned with the grain of the fabric, the structure deforms more easily.

During the first few washes, the internal tension of the knit is released and the garment pieces twist slightly.

What makes the difference

  • Alignment of the cut with the fabric grain
  • Knit stabilization
  • Quality of the cotton yarn
  • Fabric density

Why washing accentuates spiraling

Water, heat, and the rotation of the drum release the fiber's tension. If the fabric is not stable, washing accentuates the natural rotation of the jersey.

This is why some t-shirts look perfectly straight before washing and then start to spiral after a few cycles.

What worsens the phenomenon

  • Water that is too hot
  • High spin speeds
  • Overloaded machine
  • Mixing with abrasive materials

Cause → effect → solution table

Cause Visible effect Simple solution
Unstable knit Rotating seams Choose better stabilized fabric
Off-grain cut Twisted t-shirt Cut aligned with the grain
Weight too light Limp structure Opt for a denser base
Aggressive washing Accentuated spiraling Gentle cycle, moderate spin

Why quality t-shirts spiral less

A good t-shirt combines even fibers, a stable knit, and a cut well-oriented with the fabric grain. The density of the textile also plays a role: a denser base often maintains its alignment better over time.

For essential criteria: how to recognize a quality t-shirt.

How to avoid spiraling

Best practices

  • Wash at 30°C (86°F)
  • Moderate spin speed
  • Turn the t-shirt inside out before washing
  • Do not overload the machine
  • Air dry

Choosing a stable base

A dense, well-stabilized t-shirt maintains its structure and alignment better over time. The fit stays clean and the seams stay straight.
