A well-made t-shirt is a straight line. But after a few washes, some see their seams twist, shift, and lose their alignment. This is not inevitable, nor is it a material defect—it is a question of tension, washing, and manufacturing. At Tafanelli, every seam is designed to last. Here is how to keep a t-shirt from twisting in the wash.

The perfect line / double seams on a 260 GSM Tafanelli t-shirt, made in France.
Why seams twist
When a t-shirt twists, it isn't because it was "washed poorly": it is because it remembers its cut. Once soaked, cotton returns to the shape imposed on it by manufacturing tensions. If the material was not stabilized before cutting, washing reawakens these internal tensions. The seam then follows the natural movement of the thread and shifts.
1. Choose a well-constructed t-shirt
Entry-level t-shirts are often cut from unwashed rolls of fabric. The result: the cotton thread, which is naturally twisted, relaxes during the first trip through the machine. At Tafanelli, our fabrics are washed and pressed before assembly: this guarantees a stable drape, without twisting. A well-made t-shirt does not twist; it stays aligned.
2. Wash cold and without overloading
An overfilled machine deforms clothes. The t-shirt, compressed against other items, turns in on itself and twists its seams. Always wash cold, on a gentle cycle, with little water but plenty of space. The cotton needs to move freely to keep its shape. A half-full machine is a guarantee for straight seams.
3. Avoid the tumble dryer and heavy spin cycles
The tumble dryer forces an intense rotation that shifts the seams. The still-damp fibers then set in this twisted state. Prefer a slow spin (800 RPM maximum) and air drying flat. Once dry, lightly iron the seams to realign the fabric and "reset" the shape.
4. Respect the grain of the fabric
When you fold or store your t-shirt, avoid twisting it. Cotton has a memory for creases. Always align the seams, sleeves, and collar, then fold flat. These small, cumulative actions prolong the garment's structure.
5. The role of fabric weight
Heavier fabrics twist less: they better resist mechanical torque. This is why Tafanelli works with 250 GSM cotton, with a dense and regular weave. Every meter is calibrated so that thread tension remains balanced, even after dozens of washes. Stability is not a coincidence; it is craftsmanship.
