The Catholic Church in Corsica: Cardinal Bustillo, the Pope's visit, and a living faith
Corsica is a land of sea and mountains, but also a land of deep faith. Confraternities, processions, sacred chants, patron saints: Catholicism is a pillar of island identity there. In recent years, the island has experienced two historic moments: the appointment of Cardinal François-Xavier Bustillo and the visit of Pope Francis, the first by a sovereign pontiff to Corsica. The story of a very living Church—and the tribute we paid to it.
A deeply Catholic island
It is difficult to understand Corsica without its religious dimension. For centuries, Catholicism has permeated village life: every hamlet has its church, its chapel, its patron saint, and its feast day. Faith here is less a matter of dogma than of living culture and community.
It can be found everywhere: in the confraternities and polyphonic sacred singing, in processions like U Catenacciu of Sartène, in the Pisan chapels, and the patronal feasts that punctuate the year. The Dio vi Salvi Regina, a canticle to the Virgin, has even become the island's anthem. In Corsica, the sacred and identity are one and the same.
Corsican faith is not shouted; it is passed on. It is in a candle lit in the village chapel, in a procession moving through the narrow streets, in a chant rising beneath the vaulted ceilings. A spirituality of the land and of daily life.
Cardinal Bustillo, a figure of proximity
For some years now, the Church of Corsica has had a face that shines far beyond the island: that of Cardinal François-Xavier Bustillo. A Franciscan of Navarrese origin, appointed Bishop of Ajaccio in 2021, he was created Cardinal by Pope Francis in September 2023—a rare distinction and a strong sign of attention toward Corsica.
Bustillo has succeeded in making the Church popular and accessible: close to the people, present in the media, a best-selling author, he speaks a simple and warm language that touches both believers and non-believers. In a few years, he has become one of the most appreciated personalities on the island, embodying an open, joyful, and rooted faith. It was he who made the unthinkable possible: bringing the Pope to Corsica.
The historic visit of Pope Francis
On December 15, 2024, Corsica experienced a moment forever etched in its memory: the visit of Pope Francis, the first by a sovereign pontiff to the island in two thousand years of Christianity. At the invitation of Cardinal Bustillo, the Holy Father set foot on the Isle of Beauty, in Ajaccio.
The program was worthy of the event:
- A colloquium on popular religiosity in the Mediterranean at the Palais des Congrès, which the Pope concluded—a theme at the very heart of the Corsican soul.
- The Angelus recited with the Corsican clergy in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption in Ajaccio.
- A grand open-air mass at the Place d'Austerlitz (the Casone), before an immense and prayerful crowd.
- A meeting with the President of the Republic at the airport, at the end of the day.
Tens of thousands of people from all over the island participated in this timeless day. For Corsica, a land often kept at a distance from major events, it was an immense recognition and a moment of rare collective fervor.
A moment that became memory
Since then, this visit has taken on a particular resonance. Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, just a few months after his visit. His trip to Corsica will thus remain as one of the very last major journeys of his pontificate—which makes December 15, 2024, even more precious in the hearts of the Corsican people.
The universal Church has since had a new face, with the election of Pope Leo XIV. But in Corsica, the memory of Francis, welcomed as a friend under the winter sun of Ajaccio, remains intact. A page of history that no one on the island will ever forget.
There are days that transcend religion to become common memory. The day the Pope came to Corsica is one of them. Whether believers or not, the Corsican people know that on that December 15th, they experienced something unique.
Priests, close to the Corsican people
Behind the major figures and major events, Corsican faith depends above all on those who make it live on a daily basis: the village and parish priests. Those who celebrate, baptize, and accompany families in joy as in mourning, and who often know everyone by their first name.
In Balagne, this is the case of Father Louis El Rahi, pastor of the inter-parochial group of Calvi, Calenzana, and Montegrossu since 2023. Originally from Lebanon, having arrived after three years at the parish of La Gravona, he has taken up the torch from the late Abbé Ange-Michel Valéry with humility and dedication, supported by Father Alphonse Nakima. A young pastor, close to the people and the youth, who embodies this simple, human Church rooted in island life.
It is these approachable men who, discreetly, maintain the bond from generation to generation—the true strength of a faith transmitted by example and presence, much more than by words.
"L'Envol Sacré," our tribute
Faced with such a rare moment, we wanted, in our own way, to mark the event. TAFANELLI created a special piece for the Pope's visit: L'Envol Sacré.
This t-shirt, envisioned as a symbolic tribute to Corsica and to that rare moment of reflection, transmission, and elevation, was made in France from thick organic cotton, screen-printed on the front and back. A sober and powerful piece, designed to express our attachment to this island and its spiritual traditions, beyond any posturing. Now sold out, it remains one of the testaments to our connection with the living history of Corsica.
Faith, traditions, and TAFANELLI
At TAFANELLI, we are not a religious brand—but we respect and celebrate everything that makes up the soul of Corsica, and faith is an essential part of it. Confraternities, sacred chants, processions, village feasts: these are all traditions we love to talk about, because they speak of fidelity, memory, and transmission, our cardinal values.
The wardrobe for those who love the deep soul of Corsica:
