Maison Tafanelli: a postcard, a name, a century of history in Porto-Pollo

There are discoveries that take your breath away. On an old postcard of the Gulf of Valinco, a handwritten note at the bottom of the image: "Maison Tafanelli, merchant-representative". A trading house bearing our name, active in Porto-Pollo over a century ago. Coincidence or a forgotten root? Here is the story of this find, and what it says about Corsica — and about us.

The postcard and its mysterious inscription

The object is modest: an antique postcard, a sepia-purplish print from the early 20th century, in its blue frame. The caption reads: "PORTO-POLLO — Landing stage, view taken from Pointe Champagne (S.W.)". You can see the small landing stage, a few white houses leaning against the maquis, a boat run aground on the sand, the calm water of the gulf.

In the bottom left, the publisher's signature: "No. 3 – Photo D. P., Luciani". And in the bottom right, the mention that changes everything: "Maison Tafanelli, merchant-representative". This card did not just photograph Porto-Pollo: it was published or distributed by a trading house bearing our name.

One thinks they are creating a brand, and then discovers that a century earlier, someone with the same name was already doing business on this very Corsican coast. History sometimes has these winks that make you dizzy.

Porto-Pollo, a marina of the Gulf of Valinco

Porto-Pollo (Portu Poddu) is a small port in the municipality of Serra-di-Ferro, on the northern shore of the Gulf of Valinco, not far from the mouth of the Taravo. Today a popular marina, it was once a simple marina: a shelter for fishermen and a landing stage.

From the end of the 19th century, travelogues described this hamlet of white houses by the water, accessible by boat from Propriano. At a time when Corsican roads were rare and poor, these landing stages were the true gateways of trade: it was by sea that goods—wine, oil, wood, foodstuffs—arrived and departed. A strategic place, therefore, for a trading house.

What did a "merchant-representative" do?

The term "merchant-representative" tells us a lot. At the beginning of the 20th century, a merchant was a trader who bought and sold goods wholesale; a representative acted on behalf of firms or suppliers, placing their products in the region.

Publishing or having a postcard printed with one's name was common practice: it was both an item sold in one's shop and a form of advertising. That "Maison Tafanelli" placed its name on a view of Porto-Pollo indicates that it mattered in local commercial life—enough, at least, to publish its own cards. A small business anchored in its territory, exactly like the family houses we love so much in Corsica.

The Tafanelli name, a thread through time

This is what moves us. A century before TAFANELLI designed its first t-shirts, a Maison Tafanelli was already doing business on the shores of the Valinco. And chance has a way of working out: it is precisely in Serra-di-Ferro, the municipality of Porto-Pollo, that we now have one of our partner retail locations.

From the Porto-Pollo marina around 1900 to our pieces today, the same name continues to live by the same sea. Whether it is an ancestor or a namesake, this continuity has something profoundly right about it: that of a Corsican name attached to trade, the sea, and loyalty to a land.

An investigation still underway

Let's be honest: to this day, we cannot yet establish with certainty the exact link between this "Maison Tafanelli" and our own family history. Public archives online remain silent about this merchant. It is an ongoing investigation.

Leads exist: the Departmental Archives of Corse-du-Sud, the civil registry of Serra-di-Ferro and Olmeto, collections of antique postcards, and commercial registers from the turn of the century. We fully intend to follow this thread. And if you also hold a trace, a card, or a family memory linked to this Maison Tafanelli, write to us: every clue counts in reconstructing this story.

A serious brand does not invent a past: it seeks it out, patiently, even if it means saying "we don't know yet." This postcard is not proof; it is an invitation—the invitation to travel back in time with honesty.

From 1900 to today, the same house

Whether this Maison Tafanelli is our direct ancestor or not, it reminds us of an obvious truth: Corsica is a land of family houses, honest commerce, and transmission. It is in this lineage that we see ourselves, with humility—that of the people who keep a name, a coastline, and a craft alive, generation after generation.
