Le Grand Hôtel de Cala Rossa: the place where it all began

There are collaborations you sign with your head. And there are those you sign with your heart, because they were written long before the brand. The Grand Hôtel de Cala Rossa, on the peninsula of the same name in the bay of Porto-Vecchio, belongs to the latter category. It was in these waters that the founder of TAFANELLI learned to swim as a child, alongside his mother, the woman whose name the brand bears. Today, our pieces live in this legendary Corsican hotel, a Relais & Châteaux member. This article tells the story of this timeless place, and why this collaboration touches us more than any other.

A story that begins in the water

Before being a brand, TAFANELLI is a family name. And before being a collaboration, Cala Rossa is a childhood memory.

It is here, in this bay with its calm, translucent waters, that Matthieu grew up and swam every summer of his childhood. Here that his mother, a Tafanelli, taught him the sea: the first strokes along the fine sand beach, the back-and-forth trips to the pontoon, the entire afternoons spent in the water until his fingers wrinkled and the light turned golden behind the pine forest.

When asked where the TAFANELLI imagination comes from, the answer is right here, on this peninsula. The Mediterranean Diver, the man suspended between sea and sky who adorns one of our most iconic t-shirts, was born from those summers. The Mare, Muntagna, Machja trinity as well: at Cala Rossa, the sea touches the pine forest, and the pine forest touches the maquis. Our entire visual vocabulary took root in this landscape.

You don't choose your favorite places; they choose you. Cala Rossa is the water of our first strokes, my mother's hand letting go of mine to let me swim alone. The brand bears her name. It was natural that our pieces would one day return to live here.

A family home turned legend

The Grand Hôtel de Cala Rossa is not a palace like any other. It is first and foremost a family hotel, a House in the noble sense, which dropped anchor on the Cala Rossa peninsula, right on the water's edge, along an immense beach of fine sand.

The spirit of the place

A member of Relais & Châteaux and the Grandes Maisons Corses, this 5-star establishment has built its reputation on a simple, rare idea: luxury without ostentation. Here, there is no flashy marble. Just soft Mediterranean tones, white and greige, objects collected by the owners during their travels, an atmosphere of a beautiful Southern home that is passed down, as the House nicely puts it, from generation to generation.

It is a confidential address, the kind that isn't advertised and that people recommend to each other in hushed tones. Loyal guests return every summer, often for decades, to find exactly what they came looking for: the time to live.

A committed philosophy

The House advocates a concrete "Green Attitude": protection of the site, organic vegetable garden, and managed care for this little corner of paradise whose primary mission is, in their own words, to make it last. A standard of preservation that resonates deeply with our own philosophy of short production runs and durable pieces.

The Cala Rossa peninsula

The location itself is worth a stop. Cala Rossa is a peninsula in the municipality of Lecci, north of the bay of Porto-Vecchio, one of the most beautiful roadsteads in the Mediterranean.

  • The beach: a long ribbon of fine sand bordered by umbrella pines, facing the calm waters of the bay.
  • The light: especially in the evening, when the sun descends behind the Ospedale mountains and sets the bay ablaze, justifying the name "Cala Rossa," the red creek.
  • The setting: the centennial pine forest, the gardens, the maquis stretching down to the sea, and in the distance, the silhouettes of the southern Corsican mountains.
  • The pontoon: the emblem of the House, it stretches into the bay like an invitation to dive, the very same one that inspired our childhood summers.

From Cala Rossa, you can venture out to the most beautiful sites in the south: Palombaggia and Santa Giulia, Bonifacio, the Bavella needles, and the Alta Rocca. But many regulars never leave the peninsula: everything is here.

The Cala Rossa art of living

What makes the magic of the House is a rhythm. The day at Cala Rossa follows the sun, not the clock.

The morning belongs to swimmers and the pontoon. Then come the slow hours: a book under the pine trees, lunch with your feet in the sand, a nap in the shade of the white and greige rooms. The afternoon glides toward the beach, paddleboarding, or the House's boat heading out into the bay. And in the evening, the golden hour brings everyone together facing the sea, glass in hand, for the spectacle of the sunset over the bay.

The rooms and suites extend this softness: chic, contemporary, and warm coastal decor, in the spirit of beautiful Southern homes, with each space made unique by the owners' travel mementos. Some even sleep in the Cabin, perched in the trees—a signature experience of the House.

Dining: from the vegetable garden to the plate

Cala Rossa is also a gastronomic destination, with several restaurants that express the same conviction: the beautiful and the good are born from the terroir.

The vegetable garden, the beating heart of the kitchen

The pride of the House is its organic vegetable garden, which supplies the kitchens with vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers. This home production inspires refined, unpretentious cuisine with great depth of flavor, crossed by a subtle dialogue of culinary cultures.

The restaurants

  • La Pinède: the gourmet restaurant, under the pine trees.
  • U Sognu: "the dream" in Corsican, a restaurant that lives up to its name.
  • I Piattini: the spirit of small plates to share, more casual.
  • From bar to bar: for the golden hour facing the bay.
  • The Sunday buffet: a local institution, which brings together people well beyond the hotel guests.

The NUCCA spa, the maquis in skincare

The NUCCA spa spans 550 m² dedicated to well-being, in a setting where wood and plants create a natural, warm sanctuary. Its uniqueness: the House has created its own "homemade" cosmetic brand, NUCCA, inspired by the Corsican maquis, with rigorous protocols and bespoke treatments.

Performance, naturalness, elegance: the hallmarks of NUCCA. Once again, a Corsican house that chose to create its own excellence rather than import someone else's. We couldn't have understood each other better.

Le Mouflon d'Or, the mountain version

Recently, Cala Rossa also expanded to higher altitudes: the Domaine Le Mouflon d'Or, in Zonza, in the heart of the Alta Rocca natural park, endorsed by Relais & Châteaux from its opening. The sea and the mountains, two sides of the same home: it would be hard to better embody the Corsican Mare è Muntagna.

For lovers of the Alta Rocca, Bavella, and the southern villages, it is the perfect address to extend the experience on the mountain side.

Our collaboration

Our pieces now live at Cala Rossa. Among them, our Navy oiled Roccapina jackets, the first of which joined the House this season: pieces designed for seaside evenings, when the breeze picks up over the bay and the golden hour stretches on.

This presence isn't just product placement. It’s a return to our roots. The completion of a story that began a long time ago in the water of the bay: the child who swam with his mother returns with pieces that bear his family name. Few brands are lucky enough to be able to tell such a story.

And our commitment to high standards is shared: a House that takes four generations to build its legend understands a brand that takes four years to perfect a t-shirt. The long view is our common language.
