Pourquoi mon t-shirt devient rêche après lavage ?
Mar 7, 2026

Why does my t-shirt become scratchy after washing?

Fabric & care

A t-shirt that becomes rough after washing doesn't necessarily mean it is worn out. The “stiff” feel often comes from invisible deposits in the fiber: limescale, laundry detergent residue, overly harsh drying, or short fibers. Understanding the mechanism helps restore lasting softness.

Rough t-shirt: what are we talking about

A rough t-shirt has a dry, almost stiff feel to the touch. It loses its natural suppleness and seems less comfortable against the skin.

This phenomenon often occurs after several washes, even if the fabric is not visibly damaged.

The role of limescale

Hard water contains limescale. With every wash, minerals settle into the fiber. Over time, these deposits stiffen the cotton and reduce its suppleness.

The harder the water in your region, the more pronounced the phenomenon.

Simple indicator: if your towels are also rough, it is likely the limescale.
