Pourquoi les coutures de mon t-shirt vrillent ?

Why do the seams on my t-shirt twist?

Structure & assembly

A t-shirt seam that twists after washing is not just an aesthetic detail. When seams turn, slide, or no longer remain straight, it is because a specific imbalance is at play: unstable knit, misaligned grain, or poorly distributed tension. Understanding the mechanics helps prevent it from happening again.

Twisted seams: what are we talking about

A twisted seam means that the side line of the t-shirt no longer stays straight. It slides toward the front or back of the garment. The hem looks uneven, and the fit seems crooked.

This phenomenon is often confused with a t-shirt that "turns," but it specifically concerns the axis of the seam.

Grain line and alignment

A t-shirt is cut from knitted fabric. If the piece is not perfectly aligned with the grain line during cutting, the fabric naturally seeks to return to its initial axis after washing.

This return creates a pivot that shifts the side seam.

Simple indicator: if the seam is no longer exactly on the side, the fabric has regained its natural tension.
