What is a twisting t-shirt
When a t-shirt twists, the side seam is no longer on the side. It shifts toward the front or the back. The bottom of the t-shirt is no longer horizontal; the cut "pivots" on the body.
This is not the same as shrinking. Here, it is an issue of axis and tension within the knit.
Twisting or shrinking
Twisting: the seams shift, the garment loses its alignment.
Shrinking: the garment becomes shorter or narrower.
For the shrinking mechanism: how to prevent t-shirts from shrinking in the wash.
Knit and grain line: the number one cause
A t-shirt is cut from knitted fabric. If the knit is not perfectly stable, or if the cut is not aligned with the grain line, the fabric seeks to return to its natural position after washing. And so it pivots.
The lighter the knit, the more easily it moves. A denser base limits displacement.
Tension, stabilization: what no one explains
Knitting puts the material under tension. If the fabric has not been sufficiently stabilized before cutting and assembly, the first wash releases the internal tensions. Then, drying sets a new "position."
That is why some t-shirts twist from the very first wash, even on a gentle cycle.
Simple indicator: a t-shirt that twists quickly is often made of a knit that was not properly stabilized.
Temperature and spin: the moment everything sets
Hot water amplifies fiber movement. High-speed spinning adds mechanical torsion. The combination strains the knit and can set the defect.
Simple settings
- 30°C
- Moderate spin
- Do not overload the machine
- Wash t-shirts with similar materials
Tumble drying and torsion: the accelerator
The tumble dryer combines heat and rotation. This is often where the t-shirt "takes on" its defect permanently. If you want to preserve the axis, opt for air drying and lay the garment flat.
| Cause | Visible effect | Simple solution |
|---|---|---|
| Unstable knit | Seams slide | Choose a denser base |
| Poorly aligned cut | Body pivots | Favor more stable construction |
| High-speed spin | Increased twisting | Reduce spin speed |
| Overloaded machine | Greater torsion | Wash with a normal load |
| Tumble dryer | Defect set | Air dry |
How to prevent a t-shirt from twisting
You cannot "lock" a knit, but you can reduce the factors that force it to pivot.
Checklist
- Wash at 30°C
- Moderate spin
- Avoid tumble drying
- Do not overload
- Choose a dense and stable base

What changes with a stable base
When the knit is dense and the construction is mastered, the t-shirt keeps its axis. The seams stay in place, the cut stays straight, and the piece ages gracefully.
If you want a solid base, start with the fabric weight: which fabric weight to choose for a t-shirt.
