Punta di Spanu and the Marine de Sant'Ambroggio: the hidden treasure of the Gulf of Calvi
Between Calvi and Lumio, at the western end of the Gulf of Calvi, hides one of Balagne's most beautiful preserved gems: the Punta di Spanu. A rocky cape protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral, a breathtaking panorama of the Genoese citadel, turquoise-water coves, and an evening light that ignites the rocks in shades of ochre. Right next door, the Marine de Sant'Ambroggio, a small, intimate port nestled between the hills and the sea, offers a gentle and secluded alternative to the busier seaside resorts of Balagne. Here is our TAFANELLI guide to this secret corner of Corsica. GPS Coordinates: 42.599 N, 8.810 E.
A hidden treasure a stone's throw from Calvi
Only a few kilometers from the Genoese citadel of Calvi, on the west side of the gulf that bears its name, lies a rocky cape whose preserved beauty remains unknown to most visitors in Balagne. A place where, just minutes away from the city's restaurants and popular beaches, you can find Corsica in its rawest, most mineral, and most luminous form.
This cape is called Punta di Spanu. It closes off the Gulf of Calvi to the west, forms the natural counterpart to the Genoese citadel to the east, and offers from its rocks one of the most moving views a visitor can find in all of Balagne. The town of Calvi, standing on its promontory, the towers of the citadel against the sky, the deep blue sea, and the Cinto massif mountains as a backdrop. A landscape one never tires of, particularly when the evening light sets the rocks ablaze with ochre and transforms the place into a sort of living painting.
At Punta di Spanu, there are no dramatic cliffs, no marshes, no lush forests, nor even a delta. In truth, here, you will find only rocks. Yes, but what rocks! The grey and ochre reflections will be an incomparable pleasure for your eyes in the evening light. The Conservatoire du Littoral, on the Spanu site.
Just before reaching Punta di Spanu, you pass through the Marine de Sant'Ambroggio, a small, discreet marina nestled between the hills and the sea, which serves as a natural starting point for exploring this entire preserved sector of Balagne.
Where Sant'Ambroggio and Punta di Spanu are located
A quick word on the geography of the area for those planning their trip.
Geographic coordinates
Punta di Spanu is located precisely at:
- GPS Coordinates: 42.599 N, 8.810 E
- Administrative commune: Lumio (Haute-Corse, 2B).
- Distance from Calvi: 8 kilometers to the east.
- Distance from L'Île-Rousse: 20 kilometers to the west.
- Distance from Calvi-Sainte-Catherine Airport: 12 kilometers.
How to get there
From Calvi, two options are available to you:
- By car: from Calvi, take the N197 towards L'Île-Rousse, then turn right at Lumio to reach the Marine de Sant'Ambroggio via the D151. It takes about 15 minutes.
- By boat from Calvi: several boat rental companies and water taxis serve the area from the old port of Calvi. The crossing takes about 20 minutes. It is arguably the most beautiful way to arrive, with Punta di Spanu gradually revealing itself from the open sea.
- On foot: from Calvi, a hike of about 3 hours along the coast leads you to Punta di Spanu. Superb for those seeking a true coastal walking experience.
Once you arrive in Sant'Ambroggio, Punta di Spanu can be reached on foot in about a ten-minute walk from the port.
The Marine de Sant'Ambroggio, an intimate port
Before reaching Punta di Spanu, you discover the Marine de Sant'Ambroggio, a small marina tucked into a sheltered cove, between the hills of Lumio and the sea.
A port on a human scale
Unlike the port of Calvi, which is very busy in high season, or the one in L'Île-Rousse, which is also saturated, the Marine de Sant'Ambroggio retains an intimate and secluded dimension. About a hundred berths, a small village of essential shops (a convenience store, a few restaurants, a newsagent, a diving center), and a sandy beach right in front of the port. Everything is human-sized, almost familial, in an atmosphere that recalls the small Corsican marinas of the 1970s.
An ideal base for exploring Balagne
Sant'Ambroggio is highly recommended as a base for your stay for those who want to explore Balagne without the bustle of the large resorts. Several holiday residences, a few charming hotels, and numerous private rentals are available there. Its central position between Calvi and L'Île-Rousse makes it a strategic anchor point: less than 15 minutes to reach either town, but with a setting much more peaceful than the two major seaside hubs.
The beach of Sant'Ambroggio
Right in front of the port, the beach of Sant'Ambroggio offers pleasant swimming in water that is generally clear and calm (the port protects the cove from prevailing winds). It is particularly suitable for families with young children, with its shallow water, seasonal lifeguards, and immediate amenities if needed. For those looking for more spectacular beaches, you need to walk a bit further towards Punta di Spanu.
Punta di Spanu, a wild preserved cape
From the marina, an easy path leads in about a ten-minute walk to the cape itself. Gradually, the Mediterranean vegetation recedes, rocks take over, and you arrive in an almost lunar world that contrasts with the gentleness of the port you just left.
An exceptional rocky chaos
Punta di Spanu is characterized by a spectacular rocky chaos. Blocks of ochre and grey granite are piled up in complex formations, creating secret coves, narrow passages, and natural pools where water slips in and out to the rhythm of the waves. A landscape reminiscent of certain places in Sardinia or the Greek Cyclades, but with the unique light and Mediterranean vegetation characteristic of Corsica.
The view of Calvi
From the furthest rocks of the cape, the view of the citadel of Calvi is likely one of the most beautiful perspectives you can have of this city from the shoreline. The Genoese citadel standing on its promontory facing the sea, the ramparts plunging towards the port, and the towers cutting against the sky. A panorama to be savored particularly at sunset, when the city takes on almost unreal golden hues.
A lighthouse and an old military post
At the end of the cape, you will find an old lighthouse and the remains of an Italian military post from the Second World War. These abandoned structures, some of which overlook the sea from about thirty meters high, add a historical and slightly mysterious dimension to the walk. They serve as a reminder that the cape long served as a strategic observation point for the Gulf of Calvi.
A site protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral
Punta di Spanu is part of the public domain managed by the Conservatoire du Littoral, which ensures its long-term preservation and free access for all visitors.
The role of the Conservatoire du Littoral
The Conservatoire du Littoral is a French public establishment created in 1975 whose mission is to acquire and protect coastal natural areas threatened by urbanization or degradation. In Corsica, it manages dozens of major sites, notably around Bonifacio, in Balagne, in Cap Corse, and in the Eastern Plain.
Punta di Spanu, with its distinctive rocky ecosystem, protected marine habitats, and endemic Mediterranean flora, deserved this protection. Thanks to the Conservatoire's status, the cape is now preserved from the urbanization that has affected other parts of the Corsican coastline and remains accessible to everyone while respecting nature.
Rules to respect on the site
To preserve this natural treasure, a few essential rules apply:
- Do not pick the flora, especially the endemic species.
- Do not disturb the wildlife, particularly nesting birds and rock lizards.
- Do not leave anything behind; take all your trash with you.
- Do not light fires (strictly forbidden, extreme fire risk).
- Do not camp (forbidden).
- Do not scuba dive without authorization (Natura 2000 zone).
- Stay on marked trails to prevent erosion.
These simple rules allow every visitor to contribute to the preservation of the site for future generations.
The secret coves and beaches nearby
Beyond the beach of Sant'Ambroggio, several more secret coves and beaches hide in the sector, accessible on foot from the marina or from the cape.
The cove of Spanu
The closest and most accessible: the cove of Spanu, a small sandy and pebble inlet nestled between the rocks of the cape. Crystal-clear water, pleasant snorkeling, intimate atmosphere. It can be reached from the Marine de Sant'Ambroggio in a 15-minute walk.
The natural pools
Around the cape, several natural pools form in the hollows of the rocks. At low tide, these shallow basins offer safe swimming and a unique setting. However, be careful: slippery rocks and waves that can rise suddenly require a certain degree of caution.
Further away, beaches accessible on foot
For those who want to extend the coastal walk from Sant'Ambroggio:
- Alga beach, about a 30-minute walk to the east, larger and busier.
- Aquale beach, wild and accessible only on foot.
- The hidden coves between Sant'Ambroggio and Lumio, difficult to access but spectacular.

Hiking trails to explore
The area of Sant'Ambroggio and Punta di Spanu offers several hiking routes, from the shortest to the most ambitious.
The Punta di Spanu loop (easy, 1.5 hours)
The essential hike of the area. From the Marine de Sant'Ambroggio, a marked trail leads to the extreme tip of the cape and returns via the northern face. About 3 kilometers in total, low elevation, minimal difficulty. Ideal for families and beginners. Plan for 1.5 hours to fully enjoy the viewpoints and possibly swim in the coves.
The coastal trail (moderate, 3 hours)
A more ambitious trail that runs along the coast between Sant'Ambroggio and Calvi, passing through Punta di Spanu. About 8 kilometers, moderate elevation, medium difficulty (some rocky sections). Best done in the late afternoon to enjoy the evening light on the rocks.
Towards the heights of Lumio (strenuous, 4 hours)
For more experienced hikers, a route goes up from Sant'Ambroggio to the heights of the village of Lumio, offering exceptional panoramas over the Gulf of Calvi and the massifs of Balagne. Expect about 4 hours round-trip, with a positive elevation gain of about 400 meters.
Practical advice
- Avoid the hottest hours in summer (11 am-4 pm), as the cape is completely exposed to the sun.
- Bring enough water (no water points on the trail).
- Closed, grippy shoes, as the rocks can be slippery.
- Complete sun protection: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses.
- Possibly a swimsuit and towel to bathe in the coves.
Evening light: the best time to visit
Punta di Spanu can be visited at any time of day, but it takes on its unique and truly magical character at the end of the day, when the sun descends towards the horizon and ignites the ochre rocks with an incomparable light.
The golden hour
An hour before sunset, the grazing light that hits the rocks of the cape creates a unique chromatic spectacle. Greys turn to gold, ochres shift to copper red, and the water takes on intense blue-green hues. The citadel of Calvi, in the background, is colored in gold, its towers shining against a sky that gradually changes from blue to pink and then to violet.
This is likely one of the richest photographic moments one can find in Corsica. Professional photographers, amateurs, or simple visitors equipped with a smartphone: everyone finds something for themselves.
Sunset
The sunset itself, with the sun disappearing behind the sea horizon, offers a spectacle of total purity. The particularity of Punta di Spanu is that it offers this show in a preserved natural setting, far from the beach restaurants and bars that often blight this experience elsewhere.
The blue hour and night
After sunset, the blue hour (the 30 minutes that follow) transforms the cape into an almost unreal setting, with the residual light of the sky reflecting on the sea and on the damp rocks. A final magical moment before night falls completely and it is time to return to Sant'Ambroggio or Calvi.
Sitting on the ochre rocks of Punta di Spanu on a summer day, watching the citadel of Calvi go from white to gold to pink, with only the sound of waves hitting the granite blocks at your feet, you understand why Corsicans speak of their island as a place that marks you forever.

What TAFANELLI wears for the adventure
At TAFANELLI, this type of place embodies exactly what we want to tell through our clothes: a strong territorial anchor, loyalty to the Corsican landscape, and the Mediterranean light as a raw material. Here are the pieces that go particularly well with a getaway to the Punta di Spanu.
The "Plongeur de Calvi" (Calvi Diver), the obvious piece
Our Le Plongeur de Calvi t-shirt is the absolute obvious choice for this getaway. A design that precisely recounts the relationship between man and the sea in the Gulf of Calvi, this ancestral practice of the free-diver who seeks his happiness in the transparent depths. 280g/m² cotton, Made in France, hand-printed, limited edition.
The "Requin Méditerranée Club" cap
Our Requin Méditerranée Club cap is essential for the Punta di Spanu. As the headland is totally exposed to the sun without a tree for shade, protecting your face becomes a necessity. Pre-washed cotton, soft structure, stiff visor. A functional piece that still retains its Mediterranean character.
The Corsican Bandana, the versatile accessory
Our Corsican bandana, with its Moor's Head, is perhaps our most versatile piece for adventure. Worn on the forehead, it absorbs sweat during a hike. Worn around the neck, it protects from the sun. Worn in the hair, it keeps strands back while swimming. Worn as a pocket square, it finishes an outfit with character.
The "Corsica 1755", for the connection
Our Corsica 1755, taken from the year of Paoli's Constitution, is the identity piece to wear proudly during a visit to a site as Corsican as the Punta di Spanu. A piece that says where you come from, without demagoguery.
All our pieces are made in France, hand-drawn by paid artists, and released in limited editions. They carry the same demand for preservation and loyalty to the territory that the Coastal Protection Agency (Conservatoire du Littoral) brings to Spanu.

A lesson on what evening light becomes when it hits the ochre rocks of a Corsican headland at the end of summer.
