What is a 250 GSM t-shirt and why does it matter

On a Tafanelli t-shirt, you can read “250 GSM”. Three letters, a number—and behind them, a truth: that of density, weight, and time. GSM is how we measure material. At Tafanelli, it is much more than a specification: it is a promise.

TAFANELLI. The weight of the cotton, the lightness of the touch.

What does 250 GSM mean?

GSM stands for “grams per square meter”. It is a unit of measurement for the weight of a fabric. The higher the number, the denser and thicker the material. A standard t-shirt, often mass-produced, weighs between 120 and 160 GSM. At Tafanelli, our t-shirts clock in at 250 GSM—a weight nearly twice the average, a guarantee of durability and comfort.

You don’t see this weight: you feel it. It gives the garment a natural drape, a subtle density, a presence on the body. It is what distinguishes a t-shirt that stands the test of time from one that falls apart.

The right weight

A t-shirt that is too light loses its shape; a t-shirt that is too heavy is stifling. 250 GSM is the perfect balance. It maintains its shape without being restrictive. It sits well without clinging, breathes without sagging. We chose this weight after months of testing: it embodies what we call the "right weight," one that accompanies life without slowing it down.

In our workshops, the cotton is woven slowly, then washed before construction to ensure its stability. This controlled density allows the fabric to retain its cut, even after years of washing.

The durability of density

The density of a fabric isn't just about its weight: it influences its resistance, its texture, and even its color. A 250 GSM t-shirt ages better because the fiber is tight. It doesn't fray, doesn't lose its shape, and keeps the depth of its hue. The organic cotton we use is long-staple, carded, then knitted with precision to create this natural thickness. This slower process results in a fabric that breathes while protecting the skin.

It is not a heavy t-shirt: it is a living one.

Comfort in wearing

A dense t-shirt does not mean a rigid one. The Tafanelli 250 GSM hugs the body without constraining it. Its slightly brushed texture on the inside offers a soft, almost velvety feel, while maintaining a clean, solid exterior surface. This comfort comes from the quality of the thread, not the treatment. No softeners, no silicone: only cotton, air, and the patient hand of the artisan.

The weight of the fabric gives a sensation of presence: you aren't just wearing a t-shirt, you are wearing a piece designed to last.

Why it matters

Choosing a 250 GSM t-shirt means choosing a garment that respects your body and the planet. Fewer washes, fewer replacements, less wear and tear. This weight ensures true durability, well beyond the reach of trends. It is also an aesthetic choice: the cut remains sharp, the edges don't curl, and the texture holds its structure. This weight tells a story: one of high standards and loyalty to the material.

A Tafanelli t-shirt is not made for a season. It is made for time.

Grammage as a signature

At Tafanelli, each reference carries its density like a fingerprint. The 250/305 t-shirt, the 450/108 sweatshirt, the 450/113 hoodie—numbers that speak of the material even before the cut. GSM is not a technical datum: it is a declaration. The declaration of a garment made to last, intended to live, and conceived with patience.

In a world where everything is getting lighter, we have chosen the weight of the real.
