At what temperature should a white T-shirt be washed?

Washing a white t-shirt means preserving its light. The whiteness of well-maintained cotton has nothing to do with chemistry: it comes down to the precision of the technique. At Tafanelli, we consider washing as a step in our craftsmanship—a way to prolong the beauty of the fabric without ever being harsh. The right temperature is not an arbitrary number: it is a balance.

The light of cotton, the patience of washing.

Whiteness, a living material

A white cotton t-shirt is not a blank canvas: it is a living material. Its brilliance depends on the quality of the thread and the density of the weave, but also on the care we give it. White absorbs light and breathes, but it also shows wear more quickly. Every wash is a chance to restore its purity—provided it is done with moderation.

In our French workshops, Tafanelli white t-shirts are washed at a low temperature before quality control. This is no accident: excessive heat damages the fiber, alters the hue, and breaks the softness of the cotton.

The ideal temperature: 30°C

30°C (86°F) is the perfect temperature. Warm enough to dissolve impurities, gentle enough to preserve the fiber. Lukewarm water cleans without shrinking and revives without dulling. Washing at higher temperatures—40°C or 60°C—accelerates the aging of cotton, making it stiff and dull over time.

A Tafanelli t-shirt, like any artisanal garment, cannot withstand excess. At 30°C, it retains its drape, its whiteness, and its suppleness. It is a question of balance between cleanliness and durability.

The right cycle

Choose a short cycle, “light cotton” or “delicate.” A white t-shirt does not need a long wash to regain its clarity. Too much agitation weakens the seams and creases the knit. A cycle of 30 to 40 minutes is sufficient, with a gentle spin (800 rpm maximum). Slower, cleaner, and more faithful to the fabric's hand.

Add your detergent in moderate amounts. Excessive product leaves invisible traces and dulls the white over time. True cleanliness is measured by the lightness of the touch, not the amount of foam.

Detergent: keep it simple

Prefer a natural detergent, free of optical brighteners or industrial fragrances. These “brightening” agents provide an artificial white while being harsh on the fiber and the natural color of the cotton. A mild, plant-based soap cleans just as well without weakening the material.

Tafanelli cotton, which is not over-processed, loves simplicity. Water, moderate heat, and just the right soap—that is what maintains its texture, its brilliance, and its longevity.

Rinsing and drying

Always rinse thoroughly. Detergent residues, even when invisible, yellow over time. A clear rinse restores the cotton’s light. For drying, forget the tumble dryer: it dulls the white and tightens the fibers. Hang your t-shirt in the open air, in the shade, on a wide hanger or laid flat. Daylight will do the rest, gently.

In our workshops in Corsica and Lyon, clothes always rest at room temperature before being folded. It is this slowness that gives the cotton its characteristic drape and softness.

The whiteness of time

A white t-shirt, over the years, takes on the color of life. It develops nuances, a patina, a warmth. This is not a loss; it is a beauty. Living cotton is never perfect, but it is sincere. Maintaining it means accepting this evolution, while sparing it from unnecessary harshness.

At Tafanelli, we believe that true whiteness is the kind that lasts—the kind achieved through respect for the process and the patience of time. 30°C, a slow cycle, gentle drying: that is all it takes for your t-shirt to keep its original light.
