Roya Beach in Saint-Florent: A Complete Guide and Our Favorite Spot, Cala Roya

At the end of the Gulf of Saint-Florent, a long stretch of fine sand lies before a calm and bright sea: Roya Beach. Family-friendly, sunny, and brought to life by sailing schools and beach huts, it is one of the most pleasant beaches in the Nebbio region. And it is precisely there that you will find our absolute favorite establishment, Cala Roya. Here is your complete guide to La Roya and its surroundings.

Roya Beach at a glance

Roya Beach unfolds at the end of the Gulf of Saint-Florent, just a stone's throw from the village, at the mouth of the Aliso River. It is a vast fine sandy beach, nearly a kilometer long, bordered by clear water with a gentle, sloping seabed — ideal for families and worry-free swimming.

The scenery before you is stunning: the waters of the gulf, the hills of Nebbio, the vineyards of Patrimonio on the heights, and, in the distance, the silhouette of the Cap Corse. Easily accessible from Saint-Florent, lively but never suffocating, La Roya combines all the perks of a large beach without losing any of its Corsican charm. It is the summer meeting place for the entire Nebbio region.

There are beaches where you just pass through, and others where you settle down. La Roya is one of those: you lay down your towel in the morning and find yourself, at sunset, not wanting to leave.

Swimming, water sports, and leisure

La Roya is a vibrant beach where everyone can find their own pace:

  • Swimming: shallow and calm water, perfect for children and casual swimmers.
  • Water sports: the Gulf of Saint-Florent is famous for its wind, making it a popular spot for windsurfing, wing foiling, kitesurfing, and paddleboarding.
  • Sailing schools and nautical clubs: ideal for learning or renting equipment.
  • Beach huts and restaurants: for lunch with your feet in the sand, a drink in the shade, and enjoying the sunset.
  • Walking: the long stretch of sand invites you to walk along the water's edge, both morning and evening.

A complete setting, bridging relaxation and activity, which explains La Roya's popularity among both families and thrill-seekers.

Cala Roya, our favorite spot

If we had to choose one place to settle down at La Roya, it would be Cala Roya without hesitation. It is our favorite establishment on this beach: a bar-restaurant with its feet in the sand, "in the shade of the pines," which perfectly captures the essence of a beautiful Corsican summer. Their motto says it all: solar cuisine.

Open every day from 10:30 AM to 11:00 PM, Cala Roya accompanies the entire day: morning coffee facing the gulf, lunch in the sun, a drink in the shade during the hottest hours, and pre-dinner drinks that stretch out until the sky catches fire above the sea. This is the Corsica we love: the kind with wonderful places run by passionate people, where you take your time and every moment counts. You can find their world and menu on their Instagram @calaroya_plage.

Like Geppetto in Bastia or our other favorite homes, Cala Roya is one of those places we want to share with you — because a good trip to Corsica is also about beautiful encounters and fine dining.

You can tell a good place by a few simple things: the welcome, the light, and the feeling that it has always been there. Cala Roya has all of that. It is more than just a beach establishment; it is a piece of the Corsican summer.

Surroundings: Saint-Florent, the Agriates, Patrimonio

La Roya is an ideal starting point to explore one of the most beautiful corners of Corsica:

  • Saint-Florent: just a few minutes away, the "little Corsican Saint-Tropez" with its citadel, port, and terraces — find our complete guide here.
  • The Agriates Desert: from Saint-Florent, water shuttles connect to the legendary beaches of Saleccia and Lotu, nearby wild gems.
  • The Patrimonio vineyards: on the hillsides, the most prestigious vineyard in Corsica, to be discovered in our Corsican wine guide.
  • Cap Corse: the great northern peninsula begins right there, with its coastal villages and marinas.

An area of rare richness, where beach, heritage, wild nature, and great wines all coexist within a few kilometers.

Practical advice

  • Location: at the end of the Gulf of Saint-Florent, in the Nebbio region (Upper Corsica), a few minutes from the village.
  • Access: easy by car or on foot from Saint-Florent; parking nearby (arrive early in high season).
  • When to go: from June to September for swimming; at the end of the day for the sunset over the gulf.
  • Top tip: combine a morning at the beach in La Roya, lunch at Cala Roya, and a boat trip to the Agriates.
  • The wind: the gulf can be windy (Libeccio) — a blessing for water sports, but something to keep in mind for pure relaxation.

La Roya and the TAFANELLI spirit

Roya Beach is the Corsican summer in its simplest and most beautiful form: sand, sea, friends, and a great meal with your feet in the water. This seaside art of living, this taste for good times shared, is exactly what we put into our pieces. The Sea (Mare) of our trinity, again and always.
